Oct 13, 2017: “A baby girl… one of the most beautiful miracles in life, one of the greatest joys we can ever know, and one of the reasons why there is a little extra sunshine, laughter and happiness in your world today.”

Vimukti charitable trust® Pothnal organized an awareness program on “save the Girl child, Educate the Girl Child” at Narbanda village, Manvi Taluka. Mrs. Shoba the resource person expressed her view saying, Female foeticide is both a national wide glitch and a social evil. Sex selective abortions and rise in the number of female infanticide have become a major burning social problem in several part of India. Cases of female foeticide are mounting at a swift rate in urban India transcending all barriers of caste, class and community. The most worried factor is the fact of homicide of a girl child is infanticide intentional act of killing a female within one year of her birth. If female babies survive foeticide, they are deserted or dumped in a dustbin or sewer. Sometimes, they are buried alive or poisoned to death. Sometimes they are even killed by applying poison on the mother’s breast. They are also sold, murdered, tortured and beaten up.

This is due to an extreme desire for the boy- child among some sections of our society that denies the female child’s right to be born in this world. Female children are also at risk from gender threats such as lack of education, child labour, child marriage and forced marriage, gender based violence and oppression. In child marriage, though the boy continues his education, the girl is deprived of her right to education and employment. Some people feel that the birth of a girl child may lower people their social status.

The School head master Mrs. Sushila expressed that, it’s the responsibility of everyone to take care of girl children and to give them all the opportunities that they need to succeed in life. “Save the Girl child, educate the Girl Child” is one of the social initiatives that everyone has to fight and promote the girl child’s integral wellbeing.  We who are present here, our aims are to protect, safeguard, support, and educate the girl child. Many who attended the program expressed very positive about it and they will join in this global fight. 300 participants benefited from these training.
